in a child's view...

Hi… to all Alopecian kids!!

My name is Alyssa Dawn. I am 9 years old and I have been diagnosed with a disease called "Alopecia Areata" for almost 3 years now.

I dedicate my web page to all fellow Alopecian kids. I hope to reach other kid's with this disease and to let others know that it affects kids just as well as it does to adults.

I had never heard of Alopecia until my doctor told me I had it. Then after talking to my Gram Chris I discovered my Auntie Dinkie (God’s angel now) had had it too although hers was related to chemotherapy treatments!

It would be great if other kid’s with "Alopecia Areata" wanted to become my e-pal or pen pal.

For those who don’t know about hair loss…

Alopecia is baldness in any form. It can effect men, women, children, and even animals.

Here are some known causes that can cause hair loss:

*      Stress that prompts growing hairs to rest and shed: Illness or surgery, Prolonged fever, Childbirth,     Emotional/psychological stress, Crash dieting

*      Hormonal problems: Overactive or underactive thyroid gland

*      Medications: Blood thinners, Chemotherapy for cancer treatment, Antidepressants, Blood pressure and heart medications

*      Hair pulled too tightly by: Hair rollers, Pigtails, Cornrows

*       Genes, Male-pattern baldness is usually inherited, Allergic reaction to medications, Radiation therapy, Infections , Autoimmune disorders, Systemic and discoid lupus erythematosus, Anemia, Hot oil treatments (can inflame the hair follicle and cause scarring)

“Alopecia Areata" is an auto-immune process that makes the body to treat its hair follicles as foreign tissue and suppress or stop hair growth. It causes mild patchy hair loss on the scalp (round or oval patches). The cause is not known and there is no known cure to this date.

A great resource for kids and adults like me go to:
